First Observation of The Library

The silent 3rd Floor

I arrived inside the Library at around 2 in the after noon. When I arrived at the top most floor of the Halle Library , I immediately observed the expected silence of everyone. The third floor is intended to "Study". After a few laps around the floor I quickly observed that, that was not the case in most situations. I determined that possibly the silence requirement was for the people taking a bit of "R & R". As the minutes past by the people didn't really move. I imagine that the people who do use the resources of the third floor come to past large amounts of time. There are the few people who came and left after they had found a particular book, or just ran in to use the limited amounts of computers. In the time I was there I saw very few different faces then when I arrived. I may benefit from changing the time for observation. I may need to make changes in time that I arrive or it possibly could be the weather keeping people away.
For my next visit I want to observe more strongly what exactly the people actually awake are doing. By doing this I may actually get a feel for the real use of the 3rd Floor.

Justin,
Good work here, starting to think about the way members of this community interact (or sleep). I like how you did some "laps" to really get a feel for the whole space, and in doing so, you seemed to key in on what the 3rd floor is about. I think you have a really cool opportunity to observe non-verbal communication. How do people, in a space where they're not supposed to talk, interact. Do cell phones go off? What happens when they do? What do most people do there? Who are the "regulars" and why are they regular? How many sleepers are there? Why do you think they choose this place? Obviously, it's quiet, but what else? You're on the right track though, keep at it!
